Corona pandemic has led to economic loss for businesses of almost every sector. But it has positively impacted and proved to be a business opportunity for online shopping portals, online entertainment platforms and Social Media platforms. Corona has helped these businesses to grow and popularise themselves amid lockdown imposed by the government for the benefit and safety of people of our nation. Internet browsing and streaming has also increased during the lockdown period.

Impact of Corona Pandemic on Social media Platforms

People in India turned towards Social Media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok to pass their time during lockdown. This led to a sudden upsurge in increase in Social Media usage. People used to spend 150 minutes per day on social media earlier, but in first week lockdown, Social Media usage had increased by 87 %. Now People spend 4 hours a day on Social Media platforms to pass time.

Most organizations are unable to brand their business, products and/or services on Social Media at full potential because of lockdown restrictions. Even then, because of the increase in the rate of social media usage by people, engagement with businesses on social media has increased which is good for organizations. Also, the organization's posts have decreased in quantity but increased in quality amid lockdown which has increased user’s engagement.

Social Media Platforms, especially Twitter and Facebook are just after News channels in dispatching latest, veracious updates and information about Corona to people. Various Social Media platforms are spreading awareness mentioned below.

  • Facebook has COVID-19 Information Centre option that provides the latest updates and information about CoronaVirus accumulated from Global Health organizations, and the Health Ministry etc.

  • Linkedin has given opportunities to organizations dealing in the Health care sector, Pharmacy, Disaster relief non-profits from 1 April 2020 to 30 June 2020 to post jobs in order to recruit potential applicants for mission critical roles.

  • Twitter has proved to be effective in disaster or crisis management. World leaders like Donald Trump, Narendra Modi spread awareness about their policies to contain corona through microblogs and videos.

  • Sharechat has been spreading information on precautionary measures such as washing hands frequently and benefits of social distancing etc. among its users.

  • Instagram Live has helped celebrities and influencers to come live to spread awareness among their followers.

Lockdown has increased users engagement on online entertainment platforms and video streaming platforms such as Youtube, Netflix, Amazon prime, Hotstar etc. that has flourished growth and profits of these platforms amid CoronaVirus pandemic crisis.

Impact of Corona Pandemic on Ecommerce Portals

SARS-COVID-19 spreads through contact with an infected person or contact with a surface that has virus from cough or sneeze of infected person. Also, the Government of India has imposed lockdown and advised people to self quarantine themselves and observe social distancing while going out. People have moved towards online grocery shopping stores such as Amazon, Flipkart, Grofers and Big Basket for basic goods.

  • Amazon, in the beginning of lockdown has announced, customers are relying on them like never before in their social distancing and self quarantine efforts.

  • Big Bazaar said that “We will be back soon! We are currently experiencing unprecedented demand.”

  • Grofers said, “ Due to the sudden rush, we have stopped servicing in many locations, but we are working to increase the capacity and will be resuming operations shortly.”

In India, Corona Pandemic has led to an increase in the number of FTUs (First Time Users) that have restraint themselves to use online shopping portals. These portals will have demand post lockdown period. Because, people know threats of Corona and will prefer online shopping while observing social distancing to safeguard themselves and family members.

Social Media platforms, no doubt have flourished during pandemic. But these platforms are working industriously to spread veracious information about Coronavirus, while deleting and avoiding misinformation. Ecommerce portals and their employees are also ingenious to provide basic goods and products on time to consumers while following government regulations.
